War of gangs or provocations 2.0 with a tragic outcome?

The Paris prosecutor's office is calling for the trial of 13 teenagers for the serious and resounding assault perpetrated in January 2021 against young Yuriy in Paris.

According to the requisitions, the public prosecutor requested on Monday the trial before the Assize Court of Paris minors of seven minors aged 16 and 17 at the time of the facts and two adults aged 18.

The prosecution also requests that four other minors, then aged between 14 and 15, appear before the juvenile court ruling in criminal matters.

Ten teenagers out of thirteen are targeted by the criminal offenses of “attempted murder” or “complicity” in this one.

The final decision on referrals to trial rests with the investigating judge.

Settlement, really?

Yuriy, a schoolboy who was about to celebrate his 15th birthday, born in Ukraine in 2006, was beaten up on the evening of January 15, 2021 on the Beaugrenelle slab, in the 15th arrondissement of the capital.

With a screwdriver in his pocket, as a precaution, he explained, he was taken to hospital in serious condition.

His vital prognosis was engaged for ten days.

His assault, documented on video, was widely attributed to a settling of scores between rival gangs against the backdrop of online provocations.

The attack had been broadcast live and triumphant "snaps" had circulated shortly after the events with one of the teenagers smiling, a phone (Yuriy's, stolen) bloodied or captions such as "I lick his blood" or "The job is over".

Various Teenagers Affected

The broadcast on social networks on January 22 of around twenty seconds of images of this attack had aroused many reactions, both from President Emmanuel Macron and from footballer Antoine Griezmann The town hall of Paris, the police headquarters, the rectorate and the Paris prosecutor's office had announced a strengthening of their anti-brawl strategy.

In its requisitions, the prosecution evokes the "exacerbated conflict" between young people from Vanves (Haut-de-Seine) and the 15th arrondissement "being part of a group", linked to Yuriy.

A conflict marked by an attack on the half-brother of one of the defendants in the same place five days before that of Yuriy.

No court conviction

Before the judge, Julien admitted having been violent, having acted aimlessly, without thinking, under “adrenaline” because his group had felt in danger, but denied any homicidal intention.

The prosecution requested a dismissal for a 14th young person, for lack of sufficient charges.

Some respondents ended up expressing regret and acknowledging their blows.

None of the thirteen boys, presumed innocent, has ever been condemned by justice.

The vast majority of them are described as uneventful, with close-knit families and no criminal history.

Yuriy not indicted

“The regrouping” on January 15 of the attackers, “previously armed with knives, hammers, replicas of handguns and who staged themselves by posting photographs on social networks, can only be analyzed in one will to commit violence and take revenge,” writes the head of the minors section of the Paris prosecutor’s office.

Many of the defendants conceded that they moved on the slab in retaliation, but without the intention of killing, for the January 10 attack.
