The Social Democrats' line has always been that the largest party in the Riksdag should have the Speaker's post.

The moderates, for their part, have claimed that the largest party in the winning bloc appoints the speaker.

Now the Moderates are no longer the largest party in their block.

It is the Sweden Democrats, who therefore claim the post.

And then the question of the speaker suddenly becomes unusually charged.

Next to the king

The Speaker is the highest elected position in Sweden.

Only the king is higher in formal rank.

The post has no political influence but is important in government formations and as an official representative of the Kingdom of Sweden.

For SD, it would be a very important gain in prestige if you got that post.

A final confirmation that the party has entered the finer rooms.

Both the S leader Magdalena Andersson and the Green Party's spokesperson Märta Stenevi have previously opened up to releasing a moderate candidate as speaker, to prevent the SD from getting the post.

But even on their own side, there are, above all in the Liberals, members who do not want to let the SD get the post of speaker.

Why is there a fight about who holds the Speaker's post - even though it is not really political in nature?
