A security source told Al Jazeera that an explosion targeted the Wazir Akbar Khan Mosque in the Green Zone in the Afghan capital, Kabul, leaving dead and wounded.

Al-Jazeera correspondent said that the explosion occurred immediately after the worshipers left Friday prayers at the main door of the mosque, adding that he saw plumes of smoke and ambulances rushing to the place to transport the victims.

The reporter indicated that the explosion occurred despite the strict security measures around the mosque.

Several deadly explosions have occurred in mosques during Friday prayers in the past few months, some of which have been claimed by the Islamic State.
