Belgian nuclear power operator Engie Group said on the 23rd local time that Belgium will officially shut down the "Doel 3" nuclear reactor later in the day.

Belgium currently has 2 nuclear power plants with a total of 7 nuclear reactors, which will be the first time the country has terminated the operation of nuclear reactors.

Under a 2003 Belgian legislation, all nuclear reactors must be shut down after 40 years of operation.

However, the proposal to forcibly terminate nuclear power generation once sparked controversy in Belgium.

Some people worry that the lack of nuclear power generation will face greater challenges in power supply, which may push up electricity prices in particular.

In this context, the Belgian federal government has previously decided to extend the service period of several nuclear reactors, but the "Dour 3" is not among them.

Against the background of shortage of energy supply and soaring electricity prices, different parties in Belgium have recently again heatedly debated whether to extend the service period of the "Dour 3", but finally decided not to extend it.

Built in 1982, the Dole 3 nuclear reactor has been in service for more than 40 years and has suffered multiple failures before.
