Volodimir Zelensky

spoke yesterday Wednesday before the

UN General Assembly

under very special circumstances.

Without a jacket, and with his traditional green shirt, the president of Ukraine addressed the international community by teleconference from his country, which has once again been threatened with a nuclear attack by Russia.

It had taken a UN vote to allow Zelensky to send a message without being present in New York.

Of the 193 member countries, only seven voted against.

Zelensky named them, one by one:

Russia, Belarus, Cuba, Nicaragua, Syria, North Korea and Eritrea

.

It was at the end of his speech that he concluded, also in an unusual way: with a one-minute standing ovation from the plenary attendees.

Zelensky ended by saying: "I wish you peace."

Shortly before, he had declared that «we are ready for peace», and that, therefore,

«the world is with us»

.

But peace goes through five conditions that are not negotiable: the restoration of the territorial integrity of your country, security guarantees against possible aggression in the future, the payment of compensation by Russia and full freedom for Ukraine to ally with other countries.

In other words: Ukraine's neutrality, which kyiv raised on occasion to try to appease Moscow, is no longer on the table.

If Putin has achieved anything, it is to strengthen Ukraine's independence.

Likewise, he once again denounced the Russian invasion and the destruction it has caused and called on the rest of the world for

"just punishment"

for Moscow because, he said, "a crime has been committed against Ukraine."

For his part, in the same forum, the president of the United States, Joe Biden,

issued a warning to Russia about the use of atomic weapons

in Ukraine.

"Russia is circumventing the nuclear non-proliferation ideals embraced by all nations, and is making irresponsible threats about the use of nuclear weapons," Biden said, adding: "No nuclear war can be won."

It was the second time in four days that Biden warned Russian dictator Vladimir Putin against using atomic weapons in Ukraine in messages intended to have the widest possible impact.

The first occasion had been on Sunday, in an interview broadcast by the CBS television network, in which she said, addressing Putin,

"don't do it, don't do it"

, referring to a nuclear war.

The US president added that if Russia uses these weapons, the US response "would be relevant."

And yesterday he did it again, only this time in the most important diplomatic forum in the world.

The references to nuclear weapons in Biden's speech were a kind of summary of the general gloomy tone of this edition of the UN Assembly, marked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, by the world energy and food crisis, by the new cold war between the US and China, due to the return of inflation, and, in the last two days, due

to Vladimir Putin's decision to lay the groundwork for annexing part of Ukraine

and calling up 300,000 Russian civilians to fight in that country .

The fight against climate change, gender ideology and other longer-term issues that used to be the focus of much of the speeches and forums that take place in parallel to the Assembly have been parked in the background this year due to the impossibility of ignore the war

Biden

, in fact, started his speech by referring to Russia's attack on Ukraine, which he described as "irresponsible" and "unprovoked", and which, he recalled, has led 40 UN countries to provide aid to the Government of that country .

The president of the United States accused Russia - "a member state of the United Nations Security Council", as he himself recalled - of "trying to erase a sovereign state from the map" in what constitutes "a brazen violation of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter."

But Biden did not limit his criticism to Moscow.

Reaffirming the hawkish tone of his government, he also leveled harsh criticism at the nuclear proliferation of China, which is embarking on a massive atomic bomb building program, and North Korea.
