Blinken before the Security Council: "We cannot let Putin go"

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on the countries of the world to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin to account over the war in Ukraine, at a meeting of the UN Security Council attended by Russia.

Speaking to his counterparts during the meeting, Blinken said that "the world order that we are gathered here to support is being destroyed before our eyes. We cannot, and will not, let Putin go" from accountability.

Blinken stressed that "President Putin's choice this week poured oil on a fire he lit himself" through measures, most notably announcing a partial mobilization of the reserve forces and the adoption of referendums in Russian-controlled Ukrainian regions.

The US Secretary added that it was important to show that "no country can redraw the borders of another country by force."

"If we fail to defend this principle that the Kremlin so flagrantly violates, we are sending a message to aggressors everywhere that they can also ignore it," he added.
