See how students in Mölndal react to the fact that they will be served more vegetarian food at school

Several municipalities in Västra Götaland have noticed the increase in food prices in the past year.

The increases vary between different foods and according to the Service Administration in Mölndal, inflation has caused their food costs to increase by 16 percent.

- We expect that we will exceed the budget by 3 million this year, so it's mainly about dampening the effect and working smart, says Elin Rosenberg Elebring acting head of administration for the city of Mölndal.

Borås keeps menu - pushes for money

The problem is noticeable in other municipalities in Västra Götaland.

In Borås, the administration has received a budget supplement to cover the increased costs for food purchases with the current menu.

In Götene and Skara municipality, they have started to look at slightly cheaper alternatives, without lowering the quality and requirements of the food.

The municipality of Gothenburg is also closely following the development.

- Should the prices increase even more in the future, we may have to plan our menus in other ways, says Carin Månsson, head of operations at Gothenburg's primary school administration.

Adjusts the menus

In Mölndal, it is noted that it is primarily meat and dairy products that have increased the most in purchase price.

Therefore, the solution was to serve more vegetables.

- We review what we serve and avoid the most expensive food products, says Elin Rosenberg Elebring acting head of administration for the city of Mölndal.

They also work to reduce food waste.

- We actually throw away five tonnes a month in Mölndal.

If we can bring it down, we contribute to saving money and eating climate-smart, says Elin Rosenberg Elebring.
