The situation in Zaporizhia "deteriorates further", according to the director general of the Energy Agency

The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, warned on Wednesday that the situation at Ukraine's Zaporizhia plant was "deteriorating further", while Ukrainians accused Russia of bombing it again.

"The situation continues to deteriorate and we cannot afford to waste time until something catastrophic happens," Grossi said after a meeting on the situation at the French mission to the United Nations, opened by President Emmanuel Macron.

The director of the agency said that he discussed the matter with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, whom he met on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

"As long as the bombing continues, the risks are high," he added.

The Ukrainian authorities accused Russia on Wednesday of bombing the site of the largest power station in Europe again, stressing that the radiation in this facility did not exceed the normal range.

"Even in the worst of circumstances, diplomacy should never stop our responsibility to do so with pragmatic, realistic proposals, and that's what we're trying to do," Grossi said.

For her part, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna declared that the goal is to "disarm the station within the framework of Ukraine's sovereignty."

By reporting a new bombing, the state-run Ukrainian nuclear power plant operator Energoatum on Wednesday called on the Atomic Energy Agency to "take more decisive action" against Moscow.
