New Orleans becomes the "murder capital": 205 homicides in 2022, a 141% increase from pre-pandemic

Overseas Network, September 19. According to the "New York Post" report on the 18th, a few days ago, the tourist city of New Orleans in the Louisiana state of the United States has been known as the "murder capital" due to a surge in murders.

The city of New Orleans has seen 205 homicides this year (2022), a 141% surge from pre-pandemic levels, data show.

Surging crime rates and poor law enforcement have made New Orleans the city with the highest homicide rate in the U.S., and the city's homicides have far surpassed violent cities like St. Louis, Chicago and New York.

There have been 205 homicides in the city so far this year, a 46 percent increase from the same time last year (2021), according to the New Orleans Metropolitan Crime Commission.

As of last week, the city had 52 homicides per 100,000 residents.

New Orleans' homicide rate this year is nearly three times that of Chicago, which has been in the spotlight for its high rates of gun violence.

Additionally, because the New Orleans Police Department is understaffed, the average response time for emergency calls is 2.5 hours.
