On September 18, local time, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Kanani said in an interview with the media that whether the United States and Iran "exchange prisoners" has nothing to do with the Iranian nuclear negotiation process, and Iran is ready to "exchange prisoners".
"With or without the Iran nuclear deal, we are ready to address the prisoner exchange issue as a humanitarian issue," Kanani said. "The parties have negotiated in different ways and reached the necessary agreements, and now It is up to the U.S. government to decide whether to complete this agreement. We are ready to implement it.”
Previously, the U.S. has repeatedly demanded that Iran release the father and son of Bagher Namazi and Siamak Namazi, who have dual U.S.-Iran citizenships.
The Namazis were convicted of espionage in Iran in 2016 and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
In June 2022, when nuclear talks resumed, Iran announced that it could release the father and son in exchange for asking the United States to release more than a dozen Iranian detainees.
