In Frankfurt, activists blocked Autobahn 66 for around two hours to protest against the construction of the controversial Riederwald tunnel and the necessary clearing of the Fechenheim forest.

According to the police, 25 people took part in the approved rally.

The demonstration on Saturday was peaceful.

According to the police, the demonstrators roped down from a motorway bridge and held up posters.

The alliance of climate justice groups and environmental organizations wants to increase the pressure against the construction of the A66 extension through the Fechenheimer forest.

Political evergreen

The demonstrators also called for a clearing stop because a protected beetle species had been discovered in the forest.

At the same time, they announced another rally for October 8th.

"Many people are very angry about the planned destruction of the particularly biodiverse forest," said Alexis Passadakis from Attac Frankfurt.

The continued construction of the A66 and its connection to the A661 with the planned tunnel have been among the long-running political issues in Frankfurt since the mid-1980s.

The clearing work for the tunnel has been postponed several times and is expected to start in winter.
