British police said that two security men were stabbed in central London on Friday, and that a person had been arrested on suspicion of carrying out the attack.

"Today, Friday, police encountered a man armed with a knife in the Leicester Square area. Two police officers were stabbed and are now being treated in hospital," the statement said.

Police said the suspect was also taken to hospital for treatment, and is still there.

In turn, the local newspaper "Daily Mail" reported, citing an unnamed source, that one of the policemen was stabbed in the neck and seriously injured.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the stabbing incident was not linked to terrorism, adding that the two policemen's injuries were not serious or life-threatening.
