• The metropolis of Bordeaux has designated six free-floating operators subject to new rules for their deployment.

  • The idea is to reduce the number of operators on the market, by harmonizing their presence on the territory of the agglomeration.

  • The number of devices in total (scooters, scooters and bicycles) will increase and 24 municipalities including Bordeaux will be affected, from November.

Since 2018, urban micromobility operators, offering self-service scooters, scooters and bikes without terminals (free-floating) have multiplied in Bordeaux, without any brakes.

In 2019, operators were offered a charter of commitments, which focused on the number of vehicles deployed and not on parking locations, one of the main contentious points concerning their development.

It turned out to be insufficient.

Last spring, the metropolis decided to put some order in the development of this new mobility, to reduce the problems of cohabitation between the different users of public space.

It launched a call for expressions of interest (AMI) to reduce the number of operators and compel them to make commitments.

“A more harmonious territorial development, an expanded global offer, controlled parking and limited speeds, these are the ambitions that the metropolis has assigned to the candidates”, she summarizes in a press release, this Wednesday.

More vehicles in 24 municipalities

At the end of the AMI, six operators were designated and their services will be deployed from November.

Bird will offer 750 electrically assisted bicycles (VAE) and Pony, 550 VAE and 200 mechanical bicycles.

Dott will provide 750 electric-assisted scooters and TIER 750 scooters of the same type.

E-Dog is commissioning a fleet of 250 electric scooters and YEGO 250 as well.

If the number of devices deployed increases considerably (+ 750 scooters, + 200 bicycles and + 100 scooters), no mass effect is to be expected since the geographical location is extended to 24 municipalities against only Bordeaux as before.

"The number of vehicles may increase depending on the activity", specifies the Metropolis.

In addition to the 150 existing parking lots in Bordeaux, 100 others will be created and 250 will be distributed in the 23 other municipalities.

The marking will be carried out in the coming weeks by the direction of the signage of the metropolis.

A control and monitoring platform will make it possible to verify compliance with the commitments of users and operators, such as borrowing and depositing a vehicle in a dedicated location.
