King Charles gives William and Kate the title of Prince and Princess of Wales

Britain's new King Charles on Friday awarded his eldest son William and his wife Kate the title of Prince and Princess of Wales, a title he and his late wife Princess Diana held.

Diana was a hugely popular figure and was constantly in the media spotlight from her marriage onwards.

Diana caused great sadness when she died at the age of 36 in a car accident in 1997, five years after her split from Charles.

A royal source said Kate values the history associated with the title but will seek to chart her own path as Princess of Wales.

In his first address to the nation as King of Britain, Charles expressed his pride in making his heir Prince of Wales.

"With Catherine (Kate) at his side, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, as far as I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations," he said.

William and Kate, both 40, have played central roles within the royal family in recent years, regularly making public appearances and taking their three young children to events such as the Queen's platinum jubilee celebration earlier this year.
