LKAB's mining causes large parts of central Kiruna to be dismantled and moved to new areas.

In the past year, cracking has been detected on a number of buildings earlier than the forecasts have indicated.

Now it has also been discovered in parts of Kiruna Hospital.

- According to the latest forecast, the existing hospital would not have to be replaced until 2030, but it now needs to be brought forward and the work to build a new hospital must be done faster, says Stefan Hämäläinen, director of societal transformations at LKAB in a press release.

Reinforcement measures

The investigation carried out at the hospital shows that there are cracks in one building in the hospital area in particular, which has affected doors, among other things.

More investigations must be carried out to get a better picture of the impact and which reinforcement measures can be taken.

- We have informed the region and have previously had long-standing discussions for compensation for a new hospital.

We now also have to review possible solutions with temporary premises for parts of the hospital's operations, should that become necessary.

LKAB will take those costs in such cases, says Stefan Hämäläinen.
