Democratic Rep. Stephanie Murphy of the US House of Representatives, who is visiting Taiwan, showed her idea that the US Congress should promote the conclusion of an FTA = free trade agreement with Taiwan in a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen.

Murphy led a bipartisan delegation of members of the U.S. House of Representatives to Taiwan on the evening of the 7th and met with President Tsai at the Presidential Office on the 8th.

At the outset, President Tsai said, "Taiwan will continue to make efforts to build closer economic and trade ties with the United States," expressing hopes for a high-level trade agreement with the United States.

In response, Senator Murphy said, ``One of the most important things Congress can do right now is to deepen economic ties with Taiwan. That's it,' he said.

In the United States, the former Trump administration withdrew from negotiations on the TPP = Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, and the Biden administration is also negative about returning to the agreement due to consideration for domestic workers.

As an alternative framework, the Biden administration has indicated a policy to launch the IPEF = Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, but it does not intend to negotiate the elimination or reduction of tariffs like an FTA, even if it is a framework that is planned to be created separately with Taiwan. It is the same.

Murphy's remarks seem to emphasize the US Congress' bipartisan support for Taiwan. not responding.
