After the disappearance of a private jet that crashed in the Baltic Sea, the search continues.

The Latvian navy has found human remains and aircraft wreckage, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

"Yesterday, 11 pieces of the aircraft were found in the sea, including fragments of seats and possible luggage, such as shoes," said Liva Veita, spokeswoman for the navy.

"Several body parts were recovered," she said, then brought ashore in the port of Ventspils and handed over to police who opened a criminal investigation.

Four people on board

The jet carrying four people took off from Spain and was due to land in Germany on Sunday but continued to fly over Europe.

French, German, Danish and Swedish fighter planes were rushed to try to make contact with the crew of the ghost plane which was continuing its flight.

The plane, a Cessna 551, crashed into the Baltic Sea off Ventspils under still unexplained circumstances.

According to Liva Veita, a drone had been used to identify the most likely coordinates of the crash and underwater robots had also been deployed in the area.
