The reform of unemployment insurance was on the menu of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.

If the current system is extended, change is expected within a year.

The government intends to respond to recruitment difficulties by changing the conditions for unemployment benefits, according to the conjecture.

This is one of the big pieces of Emmanuel Macron's five-year term.

The reform of unemployment insurance was on the agenda this Wednesday during the Council of Ministers.

Several changes are to be expected within a year, the government wishing to better understand the difficulties of recruitment.

To do this, a change in the conditions of compensation for the unemployed, depending on the economic situation, is one of the solutions studied.

"Ultimately, we want to make unemployment insurance more incentive and more protective," said Olivier Véran, the government spokesman, at the end of the Council of Ministers.

"The health of our labor market is an opportunity for long-awaited reforms in our system that will achieve full employment when the time is right for full employment," he added.

Possible adaptations

“When there are a lot of jobs available to fill, the unemployment insurance protection scheme must be more of an incentive to seek employment,” insists the former Minister of Health.

Conversely, Olivier Véran promises that in the event of a more tense situation on the job market, adaptations will be possible.

"If we were to experience more intense periods of unemployment again than those we are experiencing today, then the system must ensure the protection of those who cannot access the labor market because there is no would not be available," he concluded.
