In 2014, Eskilstuna municipality bought four wind turbines outside Sollefteå for SEK 165 million.

With the help of tax breaks for wind power electricity, the deal would contribute to lowering own electricity costs by SEK 10 million per year.

The money saved would go to a reading initiative for children and young people.

That has not been the case.

According to calculations from Eskilstuna Kommunföretat, the wind turbines have declined by eleven million kroner in the last two years.

"Nothing the municipality should deal with"

Last year Kommunföreta had the wind turbines valued.

In April 2021, they were valued at between SEK 80 and 87 million, according to figures requested by SVT Sörmland.

The Moderates' Jari Puustinen is strongly critical of the deal and calls it a fiasco.

The Sweden Democrats' Kim Fredriksson is of the same opinion.

- Wind power is not something that the municipality should deal with given the challenges we have.

That they haven't been sold long ago is surprising, he says.

Invest at home

The Social Democrats' Saarita Hooti is also not completely satisfied with the outcome.

- It is absolutely not the best deal Eskilstuna municipality has done.

We could very well sell them and instead invest in other renewable energy here at home, she says.

Linus Lakso, the environmental party's group leader in Eskilstuna, wants to protect the wind turbines in Sollefteå and believes very well that it may turn out to have been a wise and good investment now that electricity prices are rising.

Centerpariet's Arne Jonsson also thinks that the municipality should keep the wind turbines at the moment.

- They stand where they stand and produce renewable electricity and the price will rise, he says.
