Humberto Andres Coronel Godoy, 33, was killed by two men on a motorcycle near his "Amambay" radio as he was about to get into his car, police said.

Mr. Coronel had received death threats in June, which were reported to the police, the head of crime prevention in the province of Amambay, commissioner Nery Portillo, told the press.

“He had been told to shut up and stop investigating certain facts,” added the commissioner.

He assured that police protection was then offered to the journalist but that he refused it.

The mayor of Pedro Juan Caballero Jose Carlos Acevedo, 51, was also shot dead on May 17, riddled with bullets in the street by unknown persons as he left a town hall meeting.

The mayor had taken strong positions against the apparent local impunity of criminal gangs, in this border town with Brazil - an avenue connects it to the Brazilian town of Ponta Pora - and a notorious place of various trafficking, including that of Drugs.

The mayor's niece had herself been shot dead in 2021.
