LONDON

- There is no time to rest in front of the new British Prime Minister Liz Terrace, who was chosen by members of the Conservative Party to succeed former Prime Minister Boris Johnson as the leader of the ruling party, in preparation for taking over as prime minister.

While waiting for Queen Elizabeth II to officially receive her, demands began to trickle on the terrace to draw up an emergency plan facing the high cost of living and high energy prices.

Liz Terrace enters Downing Street 10 in London, to find on her table a number of burning files that need urgent solutions to save the citizens and the country's economy from a crisis that Britain has not witnessed for half a century.

competition for its own

Although Truss, who held the position of Secretary of State, was not among the preferred candidates to succeed Boris Johnson at the beginning of the race for the premiership, she succeeded in mobilizing significant support among the bases of the Conservative Party, especially when the competition was limited between her and former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, and this became clear. She was elected leader of the Conservative Party with 57% of the vote.

It is difficult to link this great result to the electoral program of Terrace alone.

Compared to Rishi Sunak, Sunak is more effective and realistic.

Other factors interfered with the selection of Terrace, including the fact that the Conservative Party's base appears to be unwilling to elect a leader of Indian origin to be the first prime minister of color and of foreign origin to lead Britain.

And Truss will have to release the measures it promised to save millions of Britons from poverty, in the coming days, and deal with complex files that will determine the fate of the country.

energy crisis

Britain is living on the impact of a continuous and rocketing rise in gas and electricity prices, and the annual energy bill is expected to reach more than 4,500 dollars, and this will make more than 8.5 million British families threatened by "energy poverty" by next January.

It is expected that Terrace will announce a number of measures to confront this crisis, foremost of which is freezing the continuous increase in the ceiling of gas prices, which rises every 3 months. This measure would rein in prices, which rose by 90% compared to last year.

This step will cost the state treasury tens of billions of dollars, and so far it is not known how the next Teres government will provide it, but it is the only option available to confront the energy crisis.

living expense

Britain is facing the largest inflation wave in more than 40 years, and the inflation rate is expected to exceed 15% by the beginning of next year, with the country's economy entering a recession that may extend to the end of 2023.

Terrace has developed a plan based on reducing tax deductions from employee wages for the Health Services Department, suspending the "green tax", which is part of the energy bill paid for social and green projects, and helping to borrow.

These measures may help citizens to face the high cost of living in the short term, but economists warn against hitting the state's tax revenues, affecting the growth of the economy, and entering a state of chronic recession that may extend for more than a year.

Liz Truss knows that the coming fall and winter will be the hardest for her government, before things start to improve, but this bet is linked to two things.

Control the inflation rate and the decline in energy prices, otherwise the country will enter a spiral of economic crises.

Brexit

Liz Truss promotes herself as a hard-line figure in dealing with the Brexit file (Britain's separation agreement from the European Union), and she chose the line of escalation with the Union, although before the referendum on it she was a supporter of staying with the European Union.

Liz Terrace will face difficult negotiations with the European Union, regarding the protocol relating to the status of Ireland, after the British government's decision under Boris Johnson to withdraw from this protocol, which determines the status of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and places goods checkpoints at Britain's maritime borders.

Despite the many warnings of the consequences of entering into a legal battle between the European Union and Britain over this protocol, Trass is a fierce defender of this decision, and even during her tenure at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she was one of the advocates of adopting confrontation with the European bloc.

Terrace will face an even greater obstacle if it adopts a hard-line approach with the European Union, which is the strict US position that promised London not to proceed with the negotiations of the free trade agreement, if the British government insists on withdrawing from the protocol on Ireland.

Thatcher image simulation

Liz Truss took advantage of the war in Ukraine to promote her image as Margaret Thatcher's successor, when she appeared at the beginning of the war atop a tank for her country's army, to mimic the image of Thatcher known as the "Iron Lady".

Teras was so enthusiastic that she encouraged her country's citizens to go to Ukraine to fight, before the military leaders intervened to criticize this situation and warn of its danger.

She will continue her predecessor Boris Johnson's policy of generous support for Ukraine militarily and financially, and escalation with Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin.
