The trial against former commissioner José Manuel Villarejo has entered its final phase this Monday, with reports from all parties on what has been proven and what justifies their requests for conviction or acquittal.

The first intervention before the court of the National Court has been that of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, which claims for the retired commissioner a lower sentence than the one that led to the start of the trial, but still very high: 86 years in prison.

The report leads to an essential statement: "Mr. Villarejo acts guided by an exclusive profit motive that denotes that we are dealing with a corrupt police officer."

This has been maintained by the prosecutor

Miguel Serrano

when explaining the elements common to the three investigations that have been brought to trial, relating to three contracts with

Cenyt

, the Villarejo company.

"The defenses argue on many occasions that they hire the Cenyt group, when the truth is that they hire Mr. Villarejo, an active commissioner whose condition they know," added the prosecutor, referring to the central line that the defendants have used in the pieces called

Iron

,

Land

and

Pintor

: that they contracted a private company without knowing that their manager was an active police commander.

In that condition of active commissioner, the work involved the commission of bribery crimes, in addition to including the discovery and revelation of secrets to carry them out.

"Axis of evil"

In addition to those who hired him, Cenyt partners and workers are accused in the case, as well as the commissioner

Enrique García Castaño

,

El Gordo

, finally removed from the oral hearing for health reasons.

That has not prevented the prosecutor from affirming that he, together with Villarejo, formed "an axis of evil" focused on earning money by taking advantage of their position as police officers.

"They had a pact in which a disgusting economic profit prevailed."

The intervention of the Prosecutor's Office began with the declaration that in the

Villarejo case

-also known as

the Tandem case-

there have been two plans, the strictly legal one and the one that has been developed outside the process, with the leaking of numerous audios recorded by the commissioner over the years and communications from the accused that have affected other police officers, politicians, members of the legal world, large companies and the Royal House.

Of this second block, the Prosecutor's Office ignores, said Serrano.

"It is already from his first statement, [Villarejo] manifested a kind of double strategy. The prosecutors are not going to play that second game, we have renounced playing it always, even assuming the personal costs that have had to be assumed. That game was plays with rules in which we recognize Mr. Villarejo's extensive qualifications and extensive experience, a game that we recognize as the perfect master and we will always give it to him".

What has been judged in this first oral hearing on the

Tándem case

is only part of the numerous open pieces within the macro-cause.

Anticorruption has referred to some of them, particularly those that serve to explain elements common to all of them.

At that point, the prosecutor has made reference to the possible implications of Villarejo's superiors, including political positions, and whose involvement in crimes is still pending resolution in those branches of

Tándem

.

political controls

"Other pieces processed reveal a very relevant issue, because they explain why Villarejo acts in a manifestly incompatible way and in a way that is not authorized for members of the DAO [Deputy Directorate of Operations of the National Police] or for those responsible for various public administrations, even at government levels.

"These pieces", Serrano continued, "show how these police commanders, like the structure of the Ministry of the Interior, use the activities of Mr. Villarejo, who commits crimes under investigation on behalf of, for interest, sponsored by these domes. These people who are from the police leadership, including their political leaders, could know about their activities and consent to them. With them, what Mr. Villarejo achieves is impunity for his actions. They facilitate his impunity and his execution."

At the moment, what the court will have to rule on will be three pieces.

The Land

piece

has investigated the work of Villarejo to favor a part of the Cereceda family in business disputes.

Iron

has focused on a law firm's assignment to spy on a competitor firm.

Finally, in the piece

Pintor

, the sentence petition refers to the commissioner's work for the businessman Juan Muñoz Tamara and his brother against the claims of a former partner.

After the final report of the Prosecutor's Office, the rest of the accusations will arrive and, finally, those of all the defenses.

All this will take several days.

When the reports are concluded, the defendants will be given a final turn and the trial will be seen for sentencing.
