8:46 a.m .: How will Gorbachev's funeral go?

The funeral will begin with a farewell ceremony at the House of Trade Unions, a symbolic place in the Russian capital where the remains of several communist dignitaries were exposed, such as that of Joseph Stalin, in 1953.

The ceremony, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. (French time), will be open to the public, the Gorbachev Foundation announced.

The former Soviet leader will then be buried in the Novodevichy cemetery, next to his wife Raisa Gorbatcheva, who died in 1999 and to whom he was very close.

8:33 am: Russia demands visas to go to the UN General Assembly

Russia expressed concern in a letter to the UN Secretary General that it had not yet received any visa from the United States for the visit in September to the UN General Assembly of its delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

"As of September 1, none of the 56 Russian representatives (...) have received entry visas for the United States" in view of the General Assembly's high-level week from September 20 to 26 in New York, writes the Russian ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia in this letter addressed to Antonio Guterres.

“The same situation exists for the journalists and the crew members of our minister's flight”.

"It is all the more worrying that in recent months the US authorities have repeatedly refused to grant visas to a number of Russian delegates to attend official UN events," he said. he, calling on the United States to respect “their legal obligations” and to “promptly grant” the requested visas.

According to an agreement dating from 1947 between the United States and the UN, the United States must not prevent the transit to the United Nations headquarters of representatives of member states.

8:20 a.m .: Is capping the price of oil new?

Systems have already been developed to prevent a nation from exporting, as is currently the case with Iran or Venezuela, or to limit its exchanges, such as Iraq under the "oil for food" program (1995 -2003).

However, the international community has never yet imposed a differentiated price on a country.

The measure may be complicated to implement.

For the ceiling to become a reality, Russia must comply with it and continue to export to countries that have adopted the principle.

However, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister in charge of energy issues, Alexander Novak, warned Thursday that Russia would no longer sell oil to countries capping prices.

8:12 am: The G7 wants to cap the price of Russian oil

The G7 countries decided on Friday to "urgently" cap the price of Russian oil, a complex mechanism to put in place.

A “broad coalition” of countries is invited to implement this decision, finalized on Friday during a virtual summit of finance ministers from the seven most industrialized countries.

“Today the G7 has taken a vital step in achieving our dual goals of putting downward pressure on global energy prices while depriving (Vladimir) Putin of revenue to fund his brutal war. in Ukraine,” immediately greeted US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

Russia for its part, even before its formalization, denounced a "completely absurd" measure.

Such “interference” in the oil market “will only destabilize the oil industry, the oil market.

And for this, European and American consumers will be the first to pay,” threatened Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, quoted by Russian news agencies.

8:02 am: Farewell, Mikhail Gorbachev

The funeral of the Soviet Union's last leader Mikhail Gorbachev is taking place in Moscow on Saturday, a minimal ceremony that President Vladimir Putin will not attend, a sign of his controversial heritage in Russia.

A great political figure of the 20th century, Gorbachev died Tuesday evening at the age of 91 following a "long and serious illness", according to the hospital where he was treated.

He made history by precipitating, in spite of himself, the disappearance of the Soviet empire in 1991, while he was trying to save it with democratic and economic reforms, thus ending the Cold War.

Hailed in the West as a man of peace, Gorbachev is seen by many in Russia as responsible for Moscow's geopolitical downgrade and the years of political, economic and moral crisis that followed the fall of the USSR.

A sign of this disaffection, no day of national mourning has been announced, even if "national funeral elements" will be present at the burial of Mikhail Gorbachev, in particular an "honor guard", underlined the Kremlin.
