There were dead and wounded in an explosion targeting a religious school in Helmand province (southern Afghanistan), while the authorities announced the high number of victims of the bombing that hit a mosque in Herat (west of the country) on Friday.

A security source told Al Jazeera that the dead and wounded were killed as a result of an explosion targeting a religious school today, Saturday, in the "Nad Ali" district of Helmand province.

Al-Jazeera correspondent reported that the number of people killed in the bombing that targeted a mosque in Herat yesterday, Friday, has risen to 52, including prominent cleric Mawlawi Mujibur Rahman Ansari, who is close to the Taliban, in addition to wounding 85 others.

Ansari's funeral was attended by the people of Herat Province, with the participation of government officials and religious school students.

The Afghan government condemned the attack, stressing that the security authorities had opened an investigation into the incident.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Taliban forces would punish the perpetrators.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but ISIS has previously claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in Afghanistan.

The Taliban say they have beefed up security in the country since taking power a year ago, but several explosions have occurred in the past few months, some targeting crowded mosques during prayers.
