In a speech to the nation on the night of Friday Swedish time, Biden said that Trump's supporters are determined to bring the United States back in time.

-Back to a US where you have no right to free choice, no right to privacy, no right to birth control, no right to marry whoever you want.

"Not all Republicans"

Biden's speech, which in many ways resembled a campaign speech, began with harsh attacks on the president's predecessors and his supporters.

But he was careful to point out that not all Republicans are so-called Maga supporters - after Trump's slogan "Make America great again".

In contrast, Biden said that the Republican Party is partly "dominated, driven and threatened by Trump and his aides".

- Donald Trump and the Maga Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic, says Biden.

On historic land

The televised speech was given in Philadelphia in front of Independence Hall – the cradle of American democracy, where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States were signed.

Nearby, Biden opponents had gathered to shout slogans.

- They have every right to be angry, this is a democracy, Biden replied from the podium, adding that those kinds of protesters rarely "suffer from good behavior".

Biden, who largely avoided even mentioning Trump by name during his first year as president, has recently increasingly attacked the representative.

In November, members are elected to the entire House of Representatives, as well as to one third of the Senate.

The Democrats are defending the smallest possible majority margin in the Senate and a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.

And in the primaries held so far ahead of the midterm elections, candidates backed by Trump have fared well.
