A judicial investigation against X for manslaughter was opened after the death of a 19-year-old prisoner this summer at the Nanterre remand center (Hauts-de-Seine).

The young detainee died on August 18, when he was to be transferred to a psychiatric hospital, according to a source familiar with the matter.

He was imprisoned on August 1 after being sentenced to four months in prison for violently breaking into a restaurant in Asnières-sur-Seine.

Following the first investigations, the Nanterre public prosecutor's office seized the territorial security of Hauts-de-Seine and opened on August 22 a judicial investigation against X for involuntary homicide, so that an investigation be carried out by an investigating judge. .

The chronology of the events that occurred before the death is the subject of ongoing investigations, said the Nanterre prosecutor's office.

A "fit of rage"

“Without a document” of identity, the detainee “communicated very little”, only in Arabic, and had a “behavioral disorder” with “crisis episodes”, according to a source close to the file.

On August 18, when he was, according to this source, in a "crisis of rage", it was decided to transfer him to the psychiatric emergency room so that he could follow "psychiatric care in a hospital environment".

“As part of his accompaniment to the hospital, he will have to be controlled and by the time the services allowing his transport arrive, he will be sedated by a medical team from the remand center and the heart will let go”, a indicated the director of the remand center Anne Drouche, assuring that "the detainee showed himself to be "opposing" but was not struck by the staff".

The detainee did not die in his cell but "in an area outside the detention", while waiting for the vehicle transporting him to the hospital.

According to the director of the penitentiary establishment, “the death of a man is never neutral for the staff who are very tried”.

"I have confidence in the men I lead and I have no elements that allow me to doubt their words," she added.
