A driver is actively sought by the gendarmes after a drama which took place on Wednesday evening, on a departmental road of Maine-et-Loire, in Montjean-sur-Loire.
According to the gendarmerie, an 82-year-old man who was walking on the edge of the RD 751 was hit by a vehicle and died on the spot, shortly after 9 p.m.
The car in question immediately fled the scene.
"Debris of a vehicle that could correspond to a Mercedes Sprinter van was found at the scene of the accident", indicates the gendarmerie, which launched an appeal for witnesses via its Facebook page.
The Chalonnes-sur-Loire gendarmerie brigade is awaiting any evidence in order to identify the driver.
