Ship hull wrecked, oil spill contained after collision in Gibraltar

Two days after a giant oil tanker and a liquefied natural gas vessel collided off the coast of Gibraltar, the hull of an oil tanker crashed, but an oil spill was averted, officials said Wednesday.

Announcing a major accident, the Gibraltar government said in a statement that the 24-member crew of the oil tanker "OS 35" was evacuated today, Wednesday, after its hull broke, adding that an oil spill had been contained.

The government said that urgent attempts to transfer the fuel were not possible, noting that the two strands of the ship had not yet completely separated.

She explained that the danger now is the occurrence of an oil spill and its impact on the local coasts and the coasts of neighboring countries.
