Social inequalities are visible at college

"We can clearly see that the inequalities in terms of grammar, spelling, construction, writing are not greater among the social categories who have the most difficulties", explains Thomas, professor of history and geography in Lyon.

The figures are clear: more than 85% of pupils from privileged backgrounds enter general second year against 42% of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.

A solution: split the classes?

As with primary school students, teacher unions recommend splitting classes, especially for mathematics, French and languages.

"When you have 30 students per class, how do you get the students to speak in a foreign language? It's mission impossible," says Sophie Venetitay, deputy secretary general of Snes-FSU.

The Minister of National Education, Pap Ndiaye, wishes to launch a reflection on the college in the fall, in particular on the 6th, the year which he describes as "pivotal".

The first objective will be to achieve a better link with the primary school.
