Norway will devote 2 billion crowns (205 million euros) to help Ukraine to supply itself with gas as winter approaches.

"The war makes Ukraine urgently in need of external support," the Norwegian Prime Minister said on Monday.

“Ukraine has asked Norway to take a leading role in securing energy access,” added Jonas Gahr Støre.

“We are following up on this and offering to use 2 billion crowns for Ukrainians to buy gas this fall and winter.

Other European countries invited to do the same

This envelope was taken from an overall aid of 10 billion crowns already promised to Ukraine by Norway.

The sum will be paid to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which will be responsible for purchasing gas.

This gesture "will notably contribute to heating hospitals and schools in Ukraine this winter and to ensuring the possibility of making hot meals", according to the Norwegian Prime Minister, who invited the other European countries to follow suit.

The Russian invasion deprives Ukraine of part of its energy supplies.
