Ukrainian forces have stormed the Russian front lines in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine, Ukraine's Hromadsk network reported Monday, citing an army spokesman.

"Ukrainian armed forces have started carrying out offensive operations in several sectors in southern Ukraine," the network quoted Natalia Homenyuk, a spokesman for the Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine, as saying.

The aim of the attack is to drive Russian forces to the other side of the Dnieper River and to regain control of the city of Kherson, a local official and advisor to the regional governor, Sergey Khelan, announced to Ukrainian television.
