A party turned into a tragedy in the Netherlands.

At least two people were killed on Saturday and several others injured in a village near Rotterdam after a truck swerved off the road and rammed into a group dining outside, Dutch police said.

The accident happened in the early evening when the Spanish-registered truck left the road in Nieuw-Beijerland, about 30 km south of Rotterdam.

"The truck drove into a group of people attending a neighborhood barbecue," Rotterdam police said on their Twitter account.

The driver taken into custody

A policeman present at the scene told local radio Rijnmond that "at least two people were killed", but that the police were still on the scene to establish a final toll.

Photographs taken after the crash identified the truck as belonging to Spain-based company El Mosca.

The truck driver, who was not injured, was arrested and taken into custody, NOS radio said.
