Taiwan's Defense Ministry said it had spotted 21 Chinese planes and 5 ships around Taiwan on Saturday, as Beijing continues its military exercises near the island, with the visits of US lawmakers and officials.

The ministry said that no Chinese aircraft crossed the demarcation line of the Taiwan Strait, which is an unofficial border between the two sides.

Beijing considers Taiwan an inalienable part of its territory, and asserts that the island will return to its sovereignty one day, and by force if necessary.

Tension reached its peak in the Taiwan Strait following a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in early August to Taipei, which angered Beijing, which launched its largest military exercises in the vicinity of the island.

After Pelosi's visit, she was followed by a number of members of Congress, the last of whom was Representative Marsha Blackburn, who arrived in Taipei last Thursday.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on Friday that the visits by US officials had reinforced the island's determination to defend itself.
