12 dead and 87 wounded in clashes in Libya

The Libyan Ministry of Health announced, today, Saturday, that the battles that erupted on Friday night, Saturday, in Tripoli, killed at least 12 people and wounded 87 others.

Six hospitals in Tripoli were affected by these battles.

Earlier today, the United Nations Mission in Libya expressed its deep concern about the ongoing armed clashes, including the indiscriminate shelling with medium and heavy weapons in the civilian-populated neighborhoods of Tripoli.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the United Nations mission called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, reminding all parties of their obligations under international human rights law and international humanitarian law to protect civilians and civilian facilities.

In turn, the United States of America confirmed that it is deeply concerned about the violent clashes in Tripoli, with reports of civilian casualties and property damage.

"We stand by the Libyan people in calling for peaceful dialogue," the US embassy in Tripoli said in a statement.
