• Diplomacy Pedro Sánchez launches himself into synergy with the new left in Latin America

  • Tour Pedro Sánchez stands as the spearhead of Europe in Latin America in the face of the influence of China and Russia

Throughout his mandate, Pedro Sánchez has developed an intense foreign agenda to carve out an international profile, which he has sought to underpin with the Latin American tour that he has starred in this week through

Colombia, Ecuador

and

Honduras.

The head of the Executive, who seeks to lead debates in

Europe

such as the energy debate -on Tuesday he meets with German Chancellor Scholz-, also seeks to gain weight in Europe by presenting himself as an 'ambassador' of

Latin America

in the

European Union

, as an interlocutor between both sides of the Atlantic.

"Spain wants to promote relations with Latin America and the

Caribbean

, both bilaterally and also at the level of the European Union, especially during the next presidency of the European Council that Spain will hold," Sánchez explained on this Latin American tour.

The President of the Government has promised that our country "is going to promote these relations".

Before the presidents of Colombia, Ecuador and Honduras, the head of the Executive reiterated an idea: "It is essential that Latin America and the Caribbean play a role" and immediately afterwards he exposed one of the messages that he wants them to remain seated after this tour:

Spain

, and its presidency of the EU, represent "a unique opportunity to relaunch the role of Latin America in the world".

The new geopolitical context derived from the war in Ukraine and the influence that actors such as

China

and

Russia

are having in different regions of the world has made Europe say mea culpa and realize the loss of influence in Latin America and now try to redress this situation.

Everything, moreover, in a situation in which this region has an important attraction in terms of renewable energies.

Sánchez has made it clear: "Today, when Latin America and the Caribbean are consolidating as strategic and also influential regions, Spain is even more aware, if you will allow me, of the ties that link us and of the importance that the relations between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean".

And to underpin his profile as a reference leader in European-Latin understanding, he adds: "Not even Spain in Europe can be understood without that look towards, for and by Latin America. And in addition to being a strategic priority for my government, for the Spanish society as a whole, this vision must also be shared by all the Member States of the European Union".

Sánchez wants to be the link that unites the interests of one and the other, also taking advantage of the ideological closeness with the new batch of leftist leaders who are taking power in Latin America.

Establish the bond of progressivism and position itself as a benchmark in Europe for this new Latin American left led by Gustavo Petro (Colombia), Gabriel Boric (Chile) or Xiomara Castro herself (Honduras).

In this strategy of pointing out his international profile and gaining weight in Europe, Sánchez will use the Spanish presidency of the EU as a lever.

An issue that has been working on for months from La Moncloa.

Precisely the minister José Manuel Albares held a new meeting this Friday to prepare the appointment with the working group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Under that mandate, Sánchez promotes a

Europe-Celac

(Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) meeting in Spain, a meeting that has not been held since 2015.

"If this calendar represents anything, it is a unique opportunity to relaunch the role of Ibero-America on the international stage and to underline Spain's commitment to this drive, especially from the profoundly Europeanist vocation of the Government of Spain", is one of the messages that has transfer Sánchez, who this Friday discussed with the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, issues of investment, trade, cooperation and circular migration.

Spain maintains a circular migration pilot project with Honduras because 250 Hondurans a year travel to Spain to work in different agricultural campaigns and, once finished, return to their country.

The commitment is to double that figure to 500, after an agreement sealed at the last Summit of the Americas and sponsored by the

United States

.

This project has aroused the interest of the US to stop irregular migration and control flows from

Central America.

This strategy of positioning itself as a key player in Latin America is combined with Sánchez's claim to continue leading the energy debate in Europe.

Within this framework, and after giving wings on his Latin American tour to the gas interconnection between

Spain

and

Italy

if

France

continues to reject Midcat, and after German Chancellor Scholz has urged that this interconnection be launched, both leaders will meet on Tuesday at the

Meseberg Palace

and Sánchez will participate as guest of honor in the meeting of the German cabinet.
