Britain's Energy Regulatory Authority has announced a new gas price hike, with the average annual bill for a single family amounting to around £3,549.

The increase in the ceiling on gas bills prices will enter into force on the first of next October, to be reviewed every 3 months.

The announcement represents an 80% increase over the current average bill of £1,711 a year.

And the director of the authority warned that this rise may not be the last.

In the economic repercussions of the Russian war on Ukraine, natural gas prices in Europe rose near record levels, amid fears of an energy crisis that could harm the European economy and global growth.

European gas contracts traded in the Netherlands rose as much as 8%, while gas contracts in Asia rose to an all-time high.

Gas prices in Europe have risen more than 10 times compared to previous years, at a time when European countries are seeking to provide alternatives to Russian gas, whose supplies have recently declined.
