Uvalde's school board met Wednesday to decide the police chief's future, three months to the day after a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers in one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

After a unanimous vote, it was clear that the police chief would be fired, AP reports.

The decision is based on the highly criticized actions of the city's police at the time of the crime.

Heavily armed patrols arrived at the school within minutes of the attack, but police did not break into the classroom and confront the gunman for over an hour.

The police chief will be the first to be fired because of the dubious intervention.

Only one other officer — Uvalde's police lieutenant, who was the city's acting police chief on the day of the massacre — is known to have been placed on leave for his actions during the shooting.

The Texas Department of Public Safety, which had more than 90 state troopers on the scene, has also launched an internal investigation into the state police's actions.

School closed

School officials have said the Robb Elementary School facility will no longer be used.

Instead, higher education institutions elsewhere in Uvalde will serve as temporary classrooms for elementary school students, not all of whom are willing to return to school after the shooting.

A "virtual academy" will also be offered to students from Robb.
