In Myanmar, where the military holds real power, it was found that the former British ambassador to Myanmar was detained and interrogated on suspicion of violating the immigration control law.


In Myanmar, a Japanese male journalist has also been detained and prosecuted, and the military's hardline attitude toward foreigners has become noticeable.

Former British ambassador to Myanmar, Vicky Bowman, and her Burmese husband, former democracy activist Htin Lin, were detained by security authorities in the largest city of Yangon on the 24th, according to people familiar with the matter.



Regarding this, the "National Governing Council" established by the military announced on the 25th that they were investigating the two on suspicion of violating the Immigration Control Law, such as not notifying the change of address.



According to local media, Mr. Bowman served as the British ambassador to Myanmar for four years from 2002, and is currently working as the head of a think tank based in Yangon that makes recommendations on the business environment and other issues.



Last month, Japanese journalist Toru Kubota was detained in Myanmar, after which he entered the country on a tourist visa and filmed protest demonstrations against the military. The hard-line stance toward foreigners has become noticeable.
