Death toll from Algeria fires rises to 43

The death toll from the fires that engulfed forested and urban areas in northeastern Algeria has risen to 43, the National Gendarmerie Command announced to Algerian radio on Monday, and it is likely that it will not be the final outcome.

The third channel of the Algerian radio, quoting the National Gendarmerie Command, stated that "the new death toll from the fires rose after a previous toll that had talked about the death of 38 people in the fires that affected 14 states, most notably the Tarf border state with Tunisia."

The National Gendarmerie Command added that "the process of identifying the bodies is continuing", which suggests that the toll will rise.

For its part, the Civil Protection announced that within 24 hours (Saturday to Sunday) it had put out 31 fires in different regions of Algeria.
