China News Service, August 22. According to foreign media reports, Lugar Province in eastern Afghanistan has recently suffered from heavy rains and floods.
Local officials said on the 21st that the current flood has caused at least 20 deaths and 35 injuries in the province within 48 hours, more than 3,000 houses were destroyed, and more than 2,000 hectares of fields were flooded.
According to the Associated Press, local officials said the evacuation of residents in the affected area is still underway.
The Afghan Meteorological Department said more torrential rains and flooding are expected in many provinces in the next few days.
"We hope that the international community, especially the Islamic State and humanitarian organizations, will provide urgent assistance to the victims," Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban government, appealed in a video message posted on social media.
The country has been hit by natural disasters this year, including a drought and an earthquake in June that killed more than 1,000 people, Reuters reported.
