About 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the start of the Russian war in Ukraine on February 24, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army, Valery Zaluzhny, announced yesterday, while the European Union is discussing the launch of a "training and support" operation for Ukrainian forces in neighboring countries.

There are Ukrainian children who need special attention because their parents have gone to the battlefront and may have become one of our "9,000 killed heroes," Zaloghny said at a public rally in Kyiv.

Zalozhny's announcement is one of the rare statements from Ukrainian officials regarding Kiev's military losses in its war against Russian forces.

The latest estimates date back to mid-April, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that about 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and about 10,000 wounded since the beginning of the Russian war on Ukraine.

While many European countries are supplying Ukraine with military equipment, the European Union plans to organize a "train and support" mission for the Ukrainian army in Ukraine's neighboring countries, said yesterday EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

Borrell indicated that the proposal would be discussed next week at a meeting of EU defense ministers in Prague.

"I hope it will be approved," he said.

Borrell added, “The war, which seems to be prolonged, will require an effort not only in terms of securing equipment, but also in terms of training and support in organizing the army,” when talking about the Russian war on Ukraine, which began on February 24.

"We are facing a large-scale war, a conventional war, not an asymmetric guerrilla war, but a war that mobilizes huge means and hundreds of thousands of soldiers," he said.

"10 million Ukrainians left their country, as if 20% of Spaniards had left Spain," the Spanish diplomat said.

During an interview with Agence France-Presse, Dmitriy Minnick, a researcher at the Center for Studies of Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States at the French Center for International Relations, said, "We are in a period when the front is beginning to stabilize.

Even if the Russian army continues attempts to launch (limited) attacks, Moscow is in a defensive position on a large part of the front and in part of the territory it has captured in Ukraine.”

Two US military planes flew over several countries in southeastern Europe yesterday, in a new show of strength and to emphasize the "commitment" of the United States to the side of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the US Central Command announced.

B-52 Stratofortress bombers stationed in Britain yesterday afternoon carried out "low-level flights in Southeast Europe."

On the field level in Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed yesterday that its forces had killed about 100 Ukrainian soldiers in three different towns in the Donetsk region and 30 in the Zaporizhia region, in addition to 50 in the Mykolaiv region in eastern Ukraine.

Dozens of Ukrainian armored vehicles, eight command posts, a Buk-M1 anti-aircraft missile launcher and six weapons and ammunition depots for missiles and artillery were destroyed, according to the ministry.

On the other hand, Ireland announced yesterday that it had reopened its embassy in Kyiv after evacuating it at the start of the war in Ukraine.
