In the country as a whole, there are around 430,000 first-time voters.

- The number of people who are allowed to vote in all elections is estimated to increase by almost 180,000 people compared to the 2018 elections to approximately 7.5 million people, says Jonas Olofsson, statistician at Statistics Norway.

In Östergötland, the percentage of new voters has increased in eight districts, Ödeshög, Ydre, Finspång, Valdemarsvik, Linköping, Norrköping, Motala and Mjölby.

In the county's other municipalities, Kinda, Boxholm, Åtvidaberg, Söderköping and Vadstena, the number of people who vote for municipal council elections has instead decreased.

New Swedish citizens

But the fact that first-time voters are increasing does not mean that the percentage of young voters is increasing, as at national level you can see that the percentage of voters aged 18-24 is expected to be marginally smaller than in 2018.

- Longer lifespans, more first-time voters and new Swedish citizens are behind the increase in the number of eligible voters, says Jonas Olofsson.

Of the nearly 23,000 new voters in Östergötland, around 3,000 are new Swedish citizens.
