At least 15 people were killed in India after landslides caused by monsoon rains that hit the Himalayas, authorities said yesterday.

Slips and floods occur mostly in India during the monsoon period between June and September, and experts estimate that climate change is causing their frequency, intensity and suddenness to increase.

The government announced in a statement that paramedics were sent to Mandi district in Himachil Pradesh (North), where the flood swept away two houses and killed eight people.

Seven other people were killed in the area due to landslides and floods.

Television images showed part of a railway bridge that was swept away by the flood in Kangra district, according to the government statement.

19 people were stuck on the roofs of a number of houses after they were surprised by the torrential rains before they were rescued.

Schools closed in the worst affected areas.

The area attracts many tourists thanks to its snowy mountains.
