On the occasion of World Humanitarian Day
“International Humanitarian Services” remembers those who lost their lives while performing their mission
The International Humanitarian City organized an event under the slogan “One Hand Cannot Clap” on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day at its headquarters in Dubai, in the presence and participation of the United Nations Resident Coordinator to the United Arab Emirates, Dr. Dina Assaf.
City Executive Director Giuseppe Saba said, "This is the most difficult occasion to celebrate every year. We remember our colleagues and all the humanitarian workers who lost their lives while carrying out their mission. At the same time, we salute the efforts of aid workers and the impact they are leaving around the world."
He added, “Many of them work behind the scenes and within their local communities, as we remember all these people and unknown soldiers who spread humanity every day, not once a year, and we will continue at IHC to support them, and enhance cooperation for a more sustainable humanitarian response in line with The vision and wise leadership of the United Arab Emirates, and we will not stop developing innovative and forward-looking solutions, in addition to advancing effective partnerships and humanitarian operations.”
Among the speakers at the event were the Legal Adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross in the United Arab Emirates, Dr. Sama Al-Shawi, the Representative of the High Commissioner for Refugees to the Gulf Cooperation Council, Khaled Khalifa, the Country Director in the United Arab Emirates and the representative of the World Food Program in the GCC countries Gulf Cooperation, Majid Yahya.
On August 19, 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 humanitarian workers, including the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.
Five years later, the General Assembly adopted a resolution making August 19 a World Humanitarian Day.
