Supporters of the Moldovan opposition party "Shor" on Friday, August 19, held a rally near the building of the General Prosecutor's Office in Chisinau.

The protesters opposed the arrest of one of the leaders of the political association, MP Marina Tauber, and called for the resignation of President Maia Sandu.

The protesters demanded the release of Tauber, calling her a political prisoner.

As the rally participants said in an interview with Sputnik Moldova journalists, the country's authorities “shut their mouths” to the opposition politician, placing her under arrest.

In addition, the protesters said that the leadership of Moldova does not pay due attention to solving the problems of citizens, including high tariffs for gas, electricity and food prices.

During the protest action in the building of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic, the first press conference was held by the head of the country's Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Veronika Dragalin.

Tauber's lawyers told reporters that they had asked for an audience with Dragalin in order to provide her with information about the abuses and illegal actions of her subordinates, as well as to clarify the issues of Tauber's placement in custody.

However, the lawyers were refused.

“Our request was rejected without consideration.

The lawyers asked in court that the hearings be public, but this request was also rejected.

We talked about the circumstances of Marina Tauber's restrictions, where she is kept in unsuitable conditions, but there was no reaction, ”Aureliy Kolenko, the politician’s lawyer, said at the rally.

During the protest, the former President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, was also in the building of the Prosecutor General's Office, who later spoke about the work of the country's authorities.

According to him, this is the most significant problem for the inhabitants of Moldova.

“The biggest problem is the current government, which needs to be quickly driven out of all bodies and early elections should be held,” Dodon said in an interview with a journalist.

It should be noted that Dodon himself, by a court decision, has been under house arrest since the end of May 2022.

The day before, this measure was extended until September 21.

The ex-leader of Moldova is accused of illegal enrichment, passive corruption, treason and financing of a political party by a criminal group.

Tauber's parliamentary immunity was removed on July 21, after which searches were carried out in her office, as a result of which the politician was detained for 72 hours.

Then the court appointed her a preliminary arrest, she was placed in a pre-trial detention center.

The politician is suspected of falsifying the report on the financial management of the Shor party in order to hide the amount of accumulated and used funds, as well as receiving funding from the organized criminal group.

After her arrest, Tauber circulated an appeal to her supporters, in which she called the measures against her blackmail by President Maia Sandu and the Action and Solidarity party she founded.

Another trial took place this week, which extended the chosen measure of restraint.

Following the meeting, Tauber stated that the prosecution was unable to provide new arguments for her further detention.

“This is absurd, a circus, a show.

As a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, I am disappointed with what is happening in the Moldovan justice, ”Sputnik Moldova quotes her.

The situation with the persecution of politicians in Moldova was previously commented on in the Kremlin.

At the end of July, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, in an interview with journalists, said that the harsh measures of the Moldovan authorities in relation to opposition politicians can hardly be attributed to democratic methods.

He added that the Kremlin is also aware of the situation with the ex-president of the republic, Igor Dodon.

“This is impossible to approve, because, of course, it absolutely contradicts the very idea of a democratic process, democratic competition of political forces,” Peskov stressed.
