Tropical nights have given many sleep problems the last few nights.

Nights are described as tropical when the temperature does not fall below 20 degrees throughout the night and the humidity is high.

The phenomenon usually occurs at the end of summer when moist air flows in and the temperature in the sea has become high, says meteorologist Linnéa Rehn Wittskog at SMHI to TT.

- The water acts as a heat reservoir.

The temperature in the water does not change as quickly as in the air and the water becomes like a heating battery that helps keep the temperatures up.

Tropical nights in several places

Because water is the heat carrier, tropical nights rarely occur inland, but can occur in inner cities where streets and houses store heat, according to SMHI.

On the night of Monday, the night temperature did not drop below 20 degrees in Skillinge, Östergarnsholm and Fårösund.

The following night was tropical on Öland's northern cape, in Lund, on Landsort, in Falsterbo, Visby, on Skarpö and Vinga, the Svenska högarna, in Karlskrona and Halmstad, Nidingen, Skillinge, Landsort, Hoburg, Östergarnsholm, Fårösund and on the Gotska sand island.

On the night of Wednesday, the Svenska högarna, Skarpö, Stockholm (Observatorielunden), Saltsjö-Boo, Örskär, Utklippan, Söderarm and Gotska Sandön were sweating.

Colder air coming in

However, the tropical nights of recent days are not here to stay.

As early as tomorrow, Friday, it could be the last tropical night for this year.

- There is colder air coming in.

It will be both cooler and drier, says SVT's meteorologist Marcus Sjöstedt.

A lot of showers can also be activated in the coming days in the southern parts of the country, but it will still be warm, he says.
