Myanmar's top military chief and a UN envoy met for the first time since the coup d'état last February, calling for an immediate end to all violence and the release of all detainees.

UN Special Envoy for Myanmar Affairs Hayser visited Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw and met with the top military commander, General Min Aung Hlaing, on the 17th.

At the meeting, Hazer called for an immediate end to all violence in Myanmar, respect for human rights and the rule of law, and the release of all those held in custody, according to the United Nations.

Hazer also requested a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, but was unable to do so.

The UN special envoy had been searching for a visit to Myanmar with the aim of resolving the situation through dialogue since the Myanmar military launched a coup in February last year, but this is the first time that the visit has been realized, and both sides will continue to be frank in the future. It means that we have agreed to have a meaningful dialogue.

However, there are criticisms that the UN envoy's meeting with the top of the military could lead to acknowledging the military's rule, so special envoy Hayser said in a statement, "My visit was to convey the concerns of the United Nations. and does not give legitimacy in any way," he said.
