It was in March that the municipality of Grästorp received a lot of attention when the municipality picked up roughly 70 Ukrainian refugees.

It only happened within a few days after the idea came up in the municipal management and was carried out via a newly formed association, where all parties are included.

For the sake of the children

They had just arrived with their children one day in March, the mothers Halyna and Svetlana, when they told SVT that they mainly came here so that the children would be safe.

When the two of them, five months later, walk along Nossan, they have managed to build a safe existence in Grästorp, still with the children's well-being in focus.

- The important thing is that the children don't have to hear the explosions, the sirens and don't have to run down to the basement in case of an airplane alarm, says Halyna Nedykhalova.

Looking ahead

In Grästorp, Halyna now works at a school and preschool helping Ukrainian children.

In addition, she studies graphic design and wants to develop in that area.

Svetlana works in gardening, but ideally she wants to share her knowledge of beauty care with Swedish girls and dreams of her own salon.

- I hope to be able to open a beauty salon here too so I can show Swedish girls new techniques and new trends, she says.

Both Halyna and Svetlana praise the dedication of the Grästorp residents.

- The Swedes are very open.

They are with us, watching the news and crying with us and hugging us, says Svetlana.
