Sudanese official: The situation in the areas affected by the floods is "catastrophic"

A member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan, Al-Taher Abu Bakr Hajar, confirmed today, Wednesday, that the situation in the cities and villages affected by the floods is "catastrophic."

Today, the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) quoted Abu Bakr as saying at the end of his two-day visit to Gezira state, during which he inspected the villages, cities and neighborhoods of Gezira state that were affected by the recent rains and torrents that the state witnessed, that the situation in Gezira state exceeds the state’s capabilities and the extent of the damage caused to the citizens. He pointed out that those affected are in need of urgent assistance in terms of shelter, food and health, which requires urgent intervention to provide the possible immediate and urgent solutions, stressing the need for concerted popular and governmental efforts to overcome the current situation.

For his part, Ismail Awadallah Al-Aqib, the designated governor of Gezira state, announced the inventory of all the 2,000 families affected by the floods, stressing that the state government has begun providing some urgent humanitarian aid, including tents, tarpaulins, and foodstuffs.

He indicated the commitment to continue efforts to deliver humanitarian and health aid, calling on national and foreign organizations to intervene urgently to provide humanitarian aid.

On Tuesday, the governor of the island announced that the number of victims of rain and torrential rain had risen to 77, noting that more than 750 houses had completely collapsed, and 3000 had been partially destroyed, warning of an environmental disaster.
