Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted on the 16th (local time) that he would buy Manchester United, the English Premier League football club, but backed it up as a "joking".

Musk wrote on Twitter that afternoon that he was "buying Manchester United" and "ur welcome."

The tweet was retweeted tens of thousands of times and attracted the attention of netizens around the world.

A Twitter user asked "Are you serious?" in a comment, and Musk replied, "No, this is an old joke on Twitter" and "I will not buy any sports team" after four and a half hours.

Musk has often posted seemingly out-of-the-ordinary tweets before, and again it's unclear whether he's actually pursuing a deal with Reuters, Reuters said.

In a previous post linked to the tweet, Musk wrote, "I support the left half of the Republican and the right half of the Democrat."

"Musk claimed to buy Manchester United in a thread joking about his political affiliation," Bloomberg said.
